Searching for Auras and Light Communication in Plants

In the process of viewing thousands of biophoton plant images, I began to wonder if the light extended out beyond the individual leaves. It occurred to me that Dr. Gmitro’s camera used a black metal plate, somewhat scratched up, to hold the samples being imaged. Black absorbs light. I remembered that healers who claim that they can see auras around the body typically say they see the auras most clearly when their patients or clients are standing in front of a white wall. White surfaces reflect light.

I posed three questions to Professor Kathy Creath, my optical-sciences colleague. First, if we dramatically increased the gain on the software, which would completely saturate the image of the leaf itself—causing the leaf to appear all white—might we discover that light extends out beyond the leaves? Kathy said, “In principle, yes.”

The second question grew out of my basic premise that all living systems, including leaves, communicate not only chemically but also electromagnetically—and this includes the sliver of the spectrum of frequencies that we experience as light. If that premise is true, might we be able to image structures between adjacent leaves that could reveal beams of possible connection and a matrix of communication? Kathy was somewhat skeptical about this, but she agreed it was worth examining.

The third question involves the background against which the leaves were tested. If we placed them on a white background instead of black, might we be able to better image light extending beyond the leaves—which would appear as auras—as well as the normally invisible beams of biophotonic light connection and communication? Kathy was quite enthusiastic about this. Not only did it make sense to her as an optical scientist, but it was also in step with her personal experience as a healer in training.

In order to see the details clearly, we had the camera collect biophoton light in the light-tight box for a total of two hours, using the procedures described previously. The two-hour exposure made it possible to see subtle replicable patterns that would otherwise have been missed.

I had no idea whether this experiment would work or not, and I didn’t even know precisely what I was looking for. What I did know was that I had to keep an open mind and look at the resulting images with fresh eyes.

I will never forget the excitement I experienced as we began to explore these three questions. At first I couldn’t believe the results we were getting. The data seemed to show that our camera was actually capturing the auras around the plants. And more than that, it was apparently capturing the light connection between them.

As in the earlier experiments, we used a supercooled, low-light digital camera. The black-and-white images of the geranium leaves shown in figure 13.1 (processed to remove the cosmic rays) offer a faint suggestion of the results; the original color images are dramatic, striking, and quite beautiful. (Again, the color versions of the images in this chapter can be seen at www.
